Backbend
Kickover
The bridge between a static bridge and a complete back walkover. This guide breaks down the backward entry, shoulder loading, leading-leg drive, weight transfer, kickover mechanics, common faults, drills and progression criteria coaches should use before moving athletes forward.
The athlete must first be able to support themselves safely through the hands and shoulders. If the head is approaching the floor, elbows collapse, the athlete experiences pain or the coach is carrying most of the body weight, return to an earlier progression. Spotting should only be performed by appropriately trained coaches.
What Is a Backbend Kickover?
Backbend first. Weight transfer second. Kickover third.
The athlete begins standing and moves backwards into a controlled bridge. Once the hands are supporting the body, one leg becomes the leading leg and drives upward.
As the leading leg rises, the athlete shifts more body weight toward the hands and shoulders. The second leg leaves the floor and the body passes through an inverted split position before the first foot reaches the floor.
The skill finishes when the second leg follows and the athlete returns to a controlled standing or lunge position.
Bridge, Kickover or Walkover?
Primarily a supported shape. The athlete establishes the position but does not need to travel through inversion back to standing.
Athlete enters the bridge from standing, may establish the bridge momentarily, then transfers weight and kicks over.
The backward reach, leg drive and inversion become one continuous movement with little or no visible pause in bridge.
Prerequisites
Controlled Bridge
Athlete can support their own weight through active arms and shoulders without pain.
Safe Backbend Entry
Athlete can reach backwards and place the hands without uncontrolled collapse onto the floor.
Single-Leg Bridge
Athlete can unload one foot while maintaining usable shoulder and arm position.
Split Handstand
Helps establish the inverted split pathway the athlete will travel through during the kickover.
Handstand Step-Down
Athlete understands how the leading leg reaches the floor and the body returns to standing.
Active Split Strength
Athlete can create leg separation using their own muscular control rather than passive flexibility alone.
The Five Phases
Find the first phase that fails. Do not keep correcting the landing if the real problem began during the bridge.
Backbend
Athlete reaches backwards under control and places the hands without dropping onto them.
Organise
Arms become active, shoulders move into a usable position and the athlete prepares the leading leg.
Shift & Kick
Body weight moves toward the hands while the leading leg drives upward aggressively.
Split Through
Second foot leaves the floor and the legs pass through a controlled inverted split position.
Step Out
Leading foot reaches the floor first, trailing leg continues through and the chest rises under control.

- Chest rises progressively.
- Finish remains balanced.
- Athlete does not fall backwards.
Build It in Order
Athlete can hold a useful bridge with active arms, open shoulders and no pain.
Athlete lifts the intended leading leg without the arms or shoulders collapsing.
Teach the athlete to move more body weight toward the hands before expecting the legs to travel over.
Use an appropriate coach-selected progression that reduces the physical demand while preserving the intended pathway.
Appropriate trained assistance helps the athlete complete the correct movement while still producing their own leg drive.
Athlete independently shifts the shoulders and drives through the inverted split.
Reduce the visible pause while preserving the correct shapes and control.
Blend the backbend and kickover into one continuous backward movement.
Match the Drill to the Fault
Bridge Rock
Small controlled movement toward and away from the hand line teaches the athlete where the body weight needs to travel.
Single-Leg Bridge Lift
Develops the ability to unload one leg while preserving shoulder position.
Split Handstand
Teaches the inverted line the athlete should move through during the kickover.
Handstand Step-Down
Isolates the first-foot landing and progressive lift of the torso.
Kickover Initiation
Rehearse strong leading-leg drive from a controlled bridge progression rather than repeatedly attempting the complete skill.
Reduced-Pause Repetitions
Once safe and independent, gradually shorten the pause between bridge entry and kickover to prepare the walkover pathway.

What Makes the Kickover Easier?
Active Shoulders
Better shoulder support allows more body weight to move toward the hands safely.
Shoulder Extension
A usable overhead range makes the weight-transfer position easier to access.
Leading-Leg Power
The leading leg should actively drive the movement, not simply float upward.
Bottom-Leg Push
The second leg contributes by pushing through the floor rather than waiting passively to be pulled over.
Split Strength
Active leg separation keeps the pathway long and reduces the temptation to tuck the legs.
Trunk Awareness
Helps prevent twisting and keeps the athlete moving through a predictable pathway.
Safety & Spotting Principles
This page supports technical coaching. It does not replace practical spotting qualification or coach education.
If the athlete cannot safely support a bridge, they are not ready to add a dynamic kickover.
Use training surfaces and equipment appropriate to the athlete and progression.
Spot only within your practical competence, qualification and training.
Repeated head proximity, arm collapse or disorientation means the progression should be reduced.
Increasing bridge depth by forcing an athlete is not a substitute for usable shoulder mobility and strength.
Significant hesitation may change the movement pattern. Return to a progression the athlete can perform with confidence and control.

IASF 2026–27 Context
Treat This Primarily as a Progression
Current IASF Level 1 standing tumbling permits skills maintaining constant physical contact with the performance surface, including walkovers, rolls, cartwheels and handstands.
Within the Hotshots Coach Bible, the Backbend Kickover is primarily used as a developmental bridge between a static Bridge and a continuous Back Walkover.
Do Not Invent Difficulty Credit
A useful training skill is not automatically a named Level Appropriate scoring skill.
For routine construction, use the current IASF Level Appropriate list and the relevant Event Producer's score system when deciding what contributes to difficulty.
