Back Extension Roll → Back Handspring
A backward tumbling connection that moves from a controlled Back Extension Roll into a single Back Handspring. The key challenge is recovering from the roll with enough balance, posture, arm organisation and leg power to create a genuine Handspring take-off rather than simply allowing backward momentum to drag the athlete into the second skill.
A fast backward roll is not automatically a good entry. Stop or regress for neck pressure, head contact, collapsed arms, uncontrolled recovery, severe undercutting, pain or significant fear. This guide does not replace practical spotting education.
What Is Back Extension Roll → Back Handspring?
A Back Extension Roll connected into one Back Handspring.
The athlete rolls backwards, transfers force through the hands and shoulders, extends the body through the inverted phase and returns the feet to the performing surface.
The athlete then needs to regain a useful standing position quickly enough to initiate a single Back Handspring.
The Back Extension Roll should not simply throw the athlete backwards into the Handspring. The second skill still requires a deliberate load, leg drive, hand support, block and snap-down.
This makes the connection an excellent test of whether the athlete can control momentum rather than merely generate it.
Prerequisites
Reliable Back Extension Roll
Athlete can move through the roll and extension without collapsing onto the head, neck or shoulders.
Reliable Single Back Handspring
The athlete already understands take-off, travel, hand support, block and snap-down independently.
Strong Recovery to Feet
Athlete can return from the Back Extension Roll without stumbling or requiring several adjustment steps.
Straight-Arm Support
Both skills require effective load transfer through the hands and shoulders.
Fast Hip Extension
The Back Extension Roll needs an active extension phase rather than simply rolling through a tucked shape.
Backward Jump Power
The athlete must still generate a true Back Handspring from the recovered position.
Combination Flow
The Back Extension Roll Must Still Be Clean
Stay Organised
The athlete should maintain useful body tension rather than collapsing loosely through the backward roll.
Contact Predictably
Hands need to arrive consistently enough to transfer force through straightening arms and active shoulders.
Push the Body Long
The movement should progress toward extension rather than remaining curled through the entire skill.
Feet Underneath
The feet need to arrive where the athlete can regain posture instead of being dragged backwards.
Extension Roll → Standing Power
This combination succeeds when the athlete controls the end of the roll instead of being carried helplessly into the Handspring.

The Flick Needs Its Own Power
Hips Back
The athlete should create a useful backwards loading direction rather than dropping vertically.
Push the Floor
The legs actively initiate the Handspring rather than momentum simply tipping the athlete backwards.
Reach Long
Hands should receive the athlete after useful travel rather than landing almost underneath the take-off feet.
Block & Snap
Straight arms, active shoulders and fast hip closure finish the single Handspring.
Build Control Before Speed
Independent, controlled and repeatable.
Athlete already owns the second skill separately.
Check the athlete's foot, chest and arm position at the end of the first skill.
Athlete learns to recover to an organised position without falling backwards.
Add the loading action without yet completing the second skill.
Confirm the athlete can create fresh leg power after the roll.
Connect both skills while allowing enough organisation between them.
Increase continuity without losing posture or BHS power.
Repeatable on counts, under fatigue and alongside other athletes.
Train the Recovery

Require enough chest recovery that the athlete is not still falling backwards.

Use visual references to expose inconsistent recovery foot placement.

Rehearse changing from recovery posture into the Handspring loading direction.

Confirm that leg drive exists independently of the roll's momentum.
Handstand Push-Tall
Reinforce active straight-arm support for both skills.

Active Elevation
Required during both the Back Extension Roll and BHS.

Supports an effective Back Extension rather than a passive backward roll.
Repeated Power
Athlete must recover from one skill and then generate a new Handspring take-off.
Load Tolerance
The pass contains repeated hand loading in quick succession.
Combination Safety
A Back Extension Roll should transfer force into the hands and arms rather than repeatedly compressing the head or neck.
Persistent elbow collapse is a reason to regress.
The athlete should not be falling uncontrollably into the second skill.
Speed should develop after reliable positions, not instead of them.
Both skills involve upper-body loading and repetition should be monitored.
Stop before weak extension, bent arms or undercut Handsprings become normal technique.
Wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck or back pain requires activity to stop.
Return to a trusted progression if the athlete loses confidence in the backward connection.
Spotting and hands-on assistance require appropriate practical coaching education.

Look Between the Skills
Athletes often perform the individual elements on similar timing but spend different amounts of time recovering between them.
Clean the feet-to-floor → chest-recovery → Handspring-load sequence instead of only counting the final flick.
IASF 2026–27 Context
Back Extension Roll + Single Handspring
The current Level Appropriate document lists Back Extension Roll within Level 1 Standing Tumbling.
It lists Single Back Handspring within Level 2 Standing Tumbling.
Current IASF rules state that skills allowed at a level encompass skills allowed in preceding levels.

Back Extension Roll → Back Handspring is not separately identified as its own named Level Appropriate combination in the current document.
