Round-Off → Back Handspring

One of the fundamental power connections in cheer tumbling. The Round-Off converts forward approach speed into a backwards rebound, while the Back Handspring continues that energy through straight-arm support, active shoulder block and a fast snap-down. A strong connection begins with a strong Round-Off — the Handspring cannot consistently repair a weak entry.

The athlete should already own both component skills before coaches prioritise speed through the connection.

This guide focuses on observation, technical development and troubleshooting. It does not provide hands-on spotting instructions. Physical assistance must come from appropriate practical coach education and remain within qualification and competence. Stop or regress for pain, repeated elbow collapse, head-contact risk, uncontrolled twisting or significant fear.

What Is Round-Off → Back Handspring?

A Round-Off immediately connected into a Back Handspring.

The athlete enters the Round-Off with forward momentum, travels through inverted hand support and rotates so the feet return together facing generally back toward the direction from which the athlete approached.

The Round-Off snap-down converts the approach into a useful backwards rebound.

Instead of stopping after the Round-Off, the athlete redirects that rebound directly into the Back Handspring.

The Back Handspring should then travel backwards with strong leg drive, straight-arm support, active shoulders and a fast snap-down.

The most important idea on this page Coaches should diagnose the Round-Off before automatically correcting the Back Handspring. A poor Round-Off frequently creates the exact BHS fault that appears afterwards.

Component one

Build a Round-Off That Can Feed Tumbling

A Round-Off used by itself and a Round-Off used to generate additional backward tumbling should both be technically sound, but the connection makes its exit mechanics especially important.

The athlete should not stutter, over-stride or dramatically change posture before each attempt.

The Round-Off should move through space rather than placing the hands almost underneath the take-off foot.

Push Through the Shoulders

Active shoulder elevation prevents the athlete sinking into the hand-support phase.

Legs

Join Efficiently

The legs need to accelerate together before the feet return to the performing surface.

A cartwheel-shaped Round-Off usually produces cartwheel-shaped power. If the legs remain separated until late, the shoulders never block and the feet return one after another, the athlete will struggle to create a strong connected Back Handspring.

Fast feet alone are not enough. A strong snap-down combines fast feet with active shoulders, body tension and a landing position capable of redirecting force into the Back Handspring.

  • Feet land behind the body's momentum.
  • Feet land apart.
  • Athlete steps backwards.
  • Chest folds heavily forward.
  • Arms drop behind the body.
  • Knees bend deeply.
  • Round-Off comes to a complete stop.
  • Athlete has to rebuild the BHS from nothing.
Don't confuse “feet in front” with sitting. The goal is a rebound-producing relationship between the feet and centre of mass, not an exaggerated squat with the hips dropped low behind the athlete.

The athlete should feel one continuous power pathway rather than a Round-Off, pause, then separate standing flick.

Preserve direction. The Round-Off should create the backwards direction the Handspring needs. The athlete should not land the Round-Off, lose all force and then throw the head and shoulders backwards to restart momentum.

A good Round-Off doesn't remove the need for good BHS mechanics. The first skill supplies useful energy; the Back Handspring must still use that energy efficiently.

Check Round-Off Rebound

If the Round-Off stops underneath the athlete, the BHS may have little backward direction available.

BHS Twists

Check Round-Off Alignment

Uneven hand placement, hip rotation or uneven feet in the Round-Off can feed rotation directly into the flick.

BHS Is Very Low

Check Snap-Down

A slow or heavily piked Round-Off finish may remove the posture and energy needed for the second skill.

Athletes can hit the same counts while still appearing badly unsynchronised if Round-Off and Back Handspring travel distances are very different.

Clean start position, approach length and total pass distance as well as timing.

Watch snap-down frames. When video cleaning, pause each athlete at Round-Off foot contact. Differences at this exact moment often explain why the following Back Handsprings look different.

IASF 2026–27 Context

Explicit Level Appropriate Pass

Round Off Back Handspring(s)

The IASF Level Appropriate document updated 4 June 2026 explicitly lists Round Off Back Handspring(s) under Level 2 Running Tumbling.

This means the single Round-Off → Back Handspring and appropriate Round-Off → Back Handspring series sit directly within the current Level 2 Level Appropriate framework.

Level 2 Legality

Handspring Series Permitted

Current Level 2 running rules permit Handspring series.

Airborne twisting is not permitted at Level 2 running except for Round-Offs.

Back Handspring Step-Out restriction Current Level 2 rules state that twisting or turning is not allowed after a Back Handspring Step-Out. Always check the exact construction of specialty passes rather than assuming every Handspring connection follows the same rule.
Level 3 pathway Round-Off → Back Tuck and Round-Off → Back Handspring(s) → Back Tuck are listed within the Level 3 Running Tumbling framework. The quality of this Level 2 connection therefore becomes a major prerequisite for safe future flip development.
Scoring reminder Level Appropriate status is not an automatic maximum score. Participation, synchronisation, execution, variety, specialty construction and the current comparative scoring framework still matter.
