Round-Off → Back Handspring
One of the fundamental power connections in cheer tumbling. The Round-Off converts forward approach speed into a backwards rebound, while the Back Handspring continues that energy through straight-arm support, active shoulder block and a fast snap-down. A strong connection begins with a strong Round-Off — the Handspring cannot consistently repair a weak entry.
This guide focuses on observation, technical development and troubleshooting. It does not provide hands-on spotting instructions. Physical assistance must come from appropriate practical coach education and remain within qualification and competence. Stop or regress for pain, repeated elbow collapse, head-contact risk, uncontrolled twisting or significant fear.
What Is Round-Off → Back Handspring?
A Round-Off immediately connected into a Back Handspring.
The athlete enters the Round-Off with forward momentum, travels through inverted hand support and rotates so the feet return together facing generally back toward the direction from which the athlete approached.
The Round-Off snap-down converts the approach into a useful backwards rebound.
Instead of stopping after the Round-Off, the athlete redirects that rebound directly into the Back Handspring.
The Back Handspring should then travel backwards with strong leg drive, straight-arm support, active shoulders and a fast snap-down.

Reliable Round-Off
Athlete can consistently complete a Round-Off with feet together, useful snap-down and a predictable travel line.
Reliable Back Handspring
Athlete understands Back Handspring travel, hand support, active block and snap-down independently.
Round-Off Rebound
Athlete can finish a Round-Off with a controlled backwards rebound rather than falling, stepping or stopping.
Handstand Block
Active shoulder mechanics support both the Round-Off exit and the Back Handspring.
Handstand Snap-Down
Athlete understands fast feet-to-floor action without collapsing through the hips.
Hurdle Consistency
The approach and hurdle are repeatable enough that the athlete enters the Round-Off from the same position.
Straight-Arm Support
Athlete tolerates dynamic loading through the shoulders, elbows and wrists.
Backward Jump Power
The athlete can actively generate the BHS instead of merely being carried backwards by the Round-Off.
Round-Off With No Rebound
If the athlete has to stop or step after every Round-Off, clean that first before expecting a quality connection.

Build a Round-Off That Can Feed Tumbling
A Round-Off used by itself and a Round-Off used to generate additional backward tumbling should both be technically sound, but the connection makes its exit mechanics especially important.
Repeatable Entry
The athlete should not stutter, over-stride or dramatically change posture before each attempt.
Travel Into the Hands
The Round-Off should move through space rather than placing the hands almost underneath the take-off foot.
Push Through the Shoulders
Active shoulder elevation prevents the athlete sinking into the hand-support phase.
Join Efficiently
The legs need to accelerate together before the feet return to the performing surface.
The Round-Off Snap-Down
Feet Move Fast
The legs actively accelerate toward the floor rather than waiting for gravity to complete the Round-Off.
Close With Control
Hip action contributes to a fast snap-down without turning the athlete into an excessively piked shape.
Finish the Block
The shoulders actively push away from the floor as the feet descend.

Round-Off → Back Handspring
The athlete should feel one continuous power pathway rather than a Round-Off, pause, then separate standing flick.
The Back Handspring
Travel Back
A useful connected BHS travels rather than rotating almost vertically over the athlete's feet.
Stay Controlled
The head should not be thrown backwards to manufacture the start of the skill.
Reach Long
The hands receive the athlete after backward travel rather than landing almost beneath the feet.
Push Tall Again
The shoulders actively block so the second half remains fast and powerful.
When the BHS Is Wrong, Look One Skill Earlier
Check Round-Off Rebound
If the Round-Off stops underneath the athlete, the BHS may have little backward direction available.
Check Round-Off Alignment
Uneven hand placement, hip rotation or uneven feet in the Round-Off can feed rotation directly into the flick.
Check Snap-Down
A slow or heavily piked Round-Off finish may remove the posture and energy needed for the second skill.
Build the Connection in Layers
Specific apparatus and hands-on assistance should be selected by appropriately qualified coaches after assessing the athlete in person.
Consistent hurdle, hand support, feet-together snap-down and direction.
Independent backward travel, straight arms, active block and snap-down.
Confirm foot placement, body alignment and control without allowing another skill to hide the finish.
Teach backward force redirection while maintaining posture, feet together and active arms.
Athlete learns to own the rebound rather than simply fall backwards.
Connect the rebound to the backward-travel mechanics of the Handspring through an appropriate coach-selected progression.
Athlete completes the connection independently while preserving both skills.
Require the athlete to finish the Level 2 pass under control rather than automatically continuing.

What Supports a Strong RO → BHS?
Repeated Block Strength
The athlete needs active shoulder elevation in both the Round-Off and Back Handspring.
Straight-Arm Support
Repeated dynamic contacts require enough strength to prevent elbow collapse.
Shape Transfer
Helps transfer from Round-Off snap-down into BHS without excessive pike or arch.
Backward Power
Supports strong hip extension through the BHS take-off.
Fast Snap-Down
Active posterior-chain control contributes to rapid leg recovery from inversion.
Rebound Capacity
Strong ankles help redirect the Round-Off landing into backward movement.
Knee Control

Athletes can hit the same counts while still appearing badly unsynchronised if Round-Off and Back Handspring travel distances are very different.

IASF 2026–27 Context
Round Off Back Handspring(s)
The IASF Level Appropriate document updated 4 June 2026 explicitly lists Round Off Back Handspring(s) under Level 2 Running Tumbling.
This means the single Round-Off → Back Handspring and appropriate Round-Off → Back Handspring series sit directly within the current Level 2 Level Appropriate framework.
Handspring Series Permitted
Current Level 2 running rules permit Handspring series.
Airborne twisting is not permitted at Level 2 running except for Round-Offs.
