Back Walkover Series
Two or more connected Back Walkovers performed without an unnecessary pause between skills. The challenge is not simply repeating a Back Walkover — it is preserving the shoulder position, split action, body line and rhythm from the end of one skill into the beginning of the next.
The athlete should already own a pain-free, repeatable single Back Walkover before connecting them. Series work increases repetition and fatigue through wrists, shoulders and the bridge pathway. If the second skill consistently becomes unsafe, shorter, twisted or painful, return to single-skill quality.
What Is a Back Walkover Series?
Consecutive Back Walkovers connected through a continuous step-through pathway.
The athlete completes the first Back Walkover and uses its finishing lunge as the starting position for the next.
The arms remain organised overhead, the body stays tall, and the athlete transfers weight directly into the next backward movement without resetting from scratch.
Each individual skill should still show the technical qualities expected from a single Back Walkover: controlled backbend, active shoulders, split-leg inversion, straight-arm support and a clear step-through.
A series is successful when later repetitions remain as technically strong as the first.
Prerequisites
Reliable Back Walkover
The single skill should be safe, pain-free and repeatable without substantial coach assistance.
Strong Finish Lunge
Athlete can arrive with enough balance and alignment to immediately initiate another skill.
Active Shoulders
Shoulder position remains dependable through repeated inverted support.
Consistent Split
The athlete can maintain purposeful leg separation through more than one repetition.
Bridge Endurance
Athlete can repeat the required shoulder and trunk positions without technique collapsing.
Rhythm Awareness
Athlete understands that the finish of one skill becomes the preparation for the next.

This is where a series either stays efficient or begins to unravel.
Six Technical Priorities
First Skill
Perform the opening Back Walkover at normal technical quality — do not rush it simply because another follows.
Step Through
Finish the leg pathway completely rather than cutting the first skill short.
Reorganise
Chest, hips and shoulders return to a position capable of initiating the next skill.
Preserve Arms
Arms remain long and useful rather than dropping during the connection.
Second Reach
The following walkover begins through controlled reach, not a sudden throw backwards.
Match Quality
Every additional repetition should maintain the same shoulder, split and hand-support standard.
First Walkover vs Second Walkover
Athletes often have enough ability to perform the series, but lose technical quality because the second skill begins from a poorer position.
Usually the Cleaner Skill
The athlete starts from a prepared stance, has time to organise the arms and knows exactly when the movement begins.
- Better starting posture.
- More deliberate shoulder reach.
- Full split more likely.
- Less fatigue.
- Greater confidence.
The True Series Test
The athlete must create the next skill from the finish of the previous one rather than from a fresh preparation.
- Arms must stay organised.
- Standing leg must stabilise quickly.
- Chest cannot remain low.
- Split quality must be reproduced.
- Shoulder opening must survive fatigue.
Rhythm Without Rushing
Full Reset
Athlete completes one walkover, pauses, changes posture, replaces feet or lowers the arms before beginning again.
Continuous but Controlled
First skill finishes completely and naturally flows into the next reach without visible hesitation.
First Skill Gets Cut Short
Athlete rushes the landing, leaves the chest low or throws backwards before balance is established.
Build the Series in Order
Pain-free, independent and repeatable with a useful finishing lunge.
Confirm that the athlete can reproduce the skill before introducing the connection.
Athlete learns to own the finish position rather than immediately losing balance.
Practise turning the lunge finish directly into the preparation for another walkover.
Connect the skills but allow enough time to preserve body position.
Gradually make the transition more continuous without shortening either skill.
Shoulder opening, leg split, hand support and finish should remain consistent across both repetitions.
Only extend the series when two repetitions remain technically stable.
Athlete can reproduce the required number of skills at routine speed, on counts and under realistic fatigue.
Train the Connection — Not Just More Reps
Walkover → Freeze Lunge
Identify whether the athlete genuinely controls the end position before asking for another skill.
Finish With Arms Up
Reinforce maintaining useful arm position rather than dropping them between repetitions.
Lunge → Reach Repetition
Practise the transition from a walkover-style finish into the opening reach without completing the entire skill.
Finish → Reach Count
Give the athlete a consistent rhythm for connecting without rushing.
Two Singles → Compare
Film or observe two separate singles and establish the technical standard the connected version must match.
Repeated Active Support
Build shoulder endurance separately so later walkovers do not sink through the arms.
Repeated Split Handstand Shapes
Develop the ability to reproduce the same leg pathway rather than losing split quality as repetitions increase.
Two Only
Keep sets intentionally short when two excellent skills teach more than four deteriorating ones.
Series on Counts
Once technique is established, align reach, hand contact, split and finishing timing across athletes.

Series Endurance
Connecting skills introduces a different challenge from demonstrating one high-quality repetition.
Repeated Active Support
The athlete must continue pushing effectively through the shoulders across each hand-support phase.
Active Split Strength
Later repetitions still need deliberate leg separation rather than allowing gravity to determine the split.
Shape Control
Trunk organisation helps the athlete avoid increasingly uncontrolled arching as fatigue develops.
Progressive Load Tolerance
Series work multiplies hand contacts, so training volume should increase progressively rather than suddenly.
Fast Stability
The finishing leg must rapidly become the stable support needed for the next skill.
Quality Endurance
The relevant measure is not “how many can they do?” but “how many can they do without the technique changing?”
Back Walkover Series Safety
Series should only be added once the individual Back Walkover is already dependable.
Wrist, shoulder or spinal discomfort should not be accepted simply because the athlete can still finish.
Stop the set when straight-arm support, alignment or control begins to deteriorate.
Greater repetition should not be combined with forced bridge or shoulder range.
Use an environment and matting appropriate to the athlete's stage and planned progression.
Hands-on spotting and assistance should be learned through practical qualification and used only within coach competence.

Clean More Than the Hands
- Same starting shape.

Choose the Right Number
More connected skills are not automatically better if later repetitions reduce execution quality.
Two clean synchronised walkovers can create a stronger routine moment than three where the final skill loses alignment or timing.
IASF 2026–27 Context
Walkovers Maintain Surface Contact
Current IASF Level 1 standing tumbling permits skills maintaining constant physical contact with the performing surface, including walkovers.
Connected conventional Back Walkovers therefore remain within the Level 1 constant-contact framework, provided the skills themselves remain otherwise legal.
Back Walkover Is Named
The IASF Level Appropriate document updated 4 June 2026 specifically lists Back Walkover under Level 1 Standing Tumbling.
It does not separately list “Back Walkover Series” as an additional standing-tumbling difficulty entry.
