Front Walkover
A complete coaching reference for developing a technically strong Front Walkover — from hurdle and hand placement to split-handstand mechanics, shoulder control, step-through, chest lift, common faults, progressions, conditioning and competition readiness.
Front Walkovers require weight-bearing through the hands, shoulder control, active split range and a controlled transition into the landing. Use suitable surfaces and appropriate progressions. Spot only within your training and competence, and stop where an athlete reports pain or repeatedly loses safe hand support.
What Is a Front Walkover?
A continuous forward transfer through a split-handstand position, landing one foot at a time.
The athlete steps or lunges forward, reaches to the floor and drives the trailing leg upward. The body passes through an inverted split position with the hands supporting the athlete.
The first leg then continues toward the floor while the second leg remains extended behind. The athlete transfers weight into the first foot and raises the torso to finish standing.
A good Front Walkover should look continuous rather than like a handstand, uncontrolled bridge fall and separate stand-up.
Prerequisites
Handstand
Athlete can safely bear body weight through straight, active arms and understands inverted alignment.
Split Handstand
Athlete can create and recognise the separated-leg position used through the centre of the walkover.
Handstand Step-Down
Athlete can deliberately place the first foot and control the second leg rather than dropping both feet.
Bridge
A usable bridge demonstrates the shoulder and trunk range required during the second half of the skill.
Active Split Range
The athlete needs to actively create leg separation rather than rely solely on passive flexibility.
Controlled Lunge
A strong start and finish lunge helps organise the entire pathway.
The Skill Should Flow Through These Shapes
The Five Phases
Lunge
Athlete begins from an organised lunge with arms long and weight prepared to travel forward.
Reach & Kick
Hands travel toward the floor while the trailing leg drives upward strongly from the hip.
Split Handstand
Shoulders actively push away from the floor and the legs remain long and separated.
Step Through
First leg reaches for the floor while the second leg continues moving behind the athlete.
Rise
Weight transfers into the front foot while the second leg and hips help lift the torso into standing.
Technical Checkpoints
Lunge & Lever
- Front knee organised.

- Hips stay aligned with travel.
Step-Through
- First foot lands close enough to support the rise.
- Second leg continues driving.
- Chest does not remain behind.
- Arms continue with the body.
- Finish remains balanced.
Build the Front Walkover
Athlete safely supports body weight through active, straight arms.
Athlete controls leg separation and understands the central walkover shape.
First foot lands deliberately while the second leg remains extended behind.
Ensure the athlete has adequate shoulder and trunk control for the open second half of the movement.
Develop continuous movement through handstand toward a controlled bridge or stand-up progression selected appropriately by the coach.
Appropriate trained assistance helps preserve the split and continuous weight-transfer pathway.
Athlete completes the entire skill without external assistance.
Athlete links skills without losing shoulder position, split range or landing control.
Skill remains controlled with counts, transitions, choreography and realistic training fatigue.

What Supports a Strong Front Walkover?
Active Shoulders
Strong shoulder support keeps the athlete lifted as the legs travel over the hands.
Shoulder Extension
Usable overhead range helps maintain the body line as the athlete transitions toward the step-down.
Trailing-Leg Drive
The back leg must actively create lift and continue moving through the skill.
Split Range
Adequate front/back leg range allows a clean separated pathway through inversion.
Active Flexibility
Athletes must create and hold their split range without external help.
Front-Leg Stability
The landing leg must receive body weight while the athlete continues the rise to standing.
Safety & Coaching Principles
Practical spotting should come from appropriate coach education. This page supports technical decision-making but does not replace hands-on qualification.
Do not develop the complete walkover while the athlete repeatedly collapses through the arms.
Use equipment and flooring appropriate to the athlete's stage of development.
Spot and progress only within your training, qualification and practical competence.
Active range and strength matter more than forcing an athlete into deeper passive flexibility.
Wrist, shoulder, neck or back pain should not be coached through.
Speed should only be added once the athlete understands and controls the pathway.

Front Walkovers in Routine
Clean the Same Details
- Same starting lunge.
- Same leading leg.
- Same hand timing.
- Same split height.
- Same landing count.
- Same finish shape.
Test the Transition
A walkover that works from a stationary setup may not yet be ready from choreography. Test the actual entry, count, floor position and exit used in routine.
IASF 2026–27
Front Walkover = Level 1 Standing Tumbling
The current IASF Level Appropriate material includes Front Walkover within Level 1 standing tumbling.
IASF's current glossary describes a walkover as a non-aerial tumbling skill passing through hand support and returning the feet to the floor one at a time.
Technique Still Matters
Level Appropriate classification identifies where the skill enters the progression structure. It does not mean one isolated Front Walkover automatically receives a fixed difficulty score.
Participation, synchronization, section construction and the actual score sheet being used still matter.
