Front Limber
A handstand-to-bridge skill that develops controlled forward inversion, shoulder opening, bridge strength and the ability to transfer body weight from the hands back to the feet. This guide covers the kick to handstand, controlled arch, two-foot bridge landing, weight shift, stand-up mechanics and the relationship between Front Limber and Front Walkover.
Do not repeatedly push an athlete deeper into a bridge to manufacture the skill. The athlete needs adequate shoulder opening, active hand support, trunk control and a bridge they can safely hold and stand from. Wrist, shoulder, neck or back pain means stop and follow the academy injury process.
What Is a Front Limber?
A controlled transition from handstand through bridge back to standing.
The athlete typically begins from a lunge and kicks into an inverted hand-supported position.
The legs organise together and the athlete gradually opens through the shoulders and trunk so both feet travel toward the floor.
The feet arrive into a bridge position while the hands remain in contact with the surface.
The athlete then transfers weight from the hands toward the feet, lifts the chest and completes a controlled stand-up.
Front Limber vs Front Walkover
Both skills require reliable straight-arm inversion, active shoulders and control while the hips move above the hands.
Legs organise together and both feet descend into the bridge before the athlete stands.
The legs remain separated through the inversion and land one after another as the athlete continues directly through to standing.
Prerequisites
Handstand
Athlete can support body weight through straight arms with active shoulders.
Bridge
Athlete can comfortably hold an appropriate bridge without pain or uncontrolled collapse.
Bridge Stand-Up
Athlete can transfer weight toward the feet and rise without being pulled through the movement.
Shoulder Opening
Adequate shoulder range allows the bridge shape to distribute extension rather than demanding everything from the lower back.
Handstand Control
Athlete should be able to slow the handstand rather than simply kicking through it.
Core Control
Athlete needs to control when the body opens rather than collapsing immediately into an arch.
Front Limber Flow
Seven Phases
Entry
Athlete reaches from a controlled lunge rather than diving toward the floor.
Kick
Trailing leg initiates while the shoulders stay active.
Handstand
Athlete passes through genuine inverted support before opening the body.
Open
Shoulders and chest gradually move through while the feet travel toward the floor.
Bridge
Feet land together into a controlled bridge.
Shift
Hips and chest move toward the feet before the hands leave the floor.
Stand
Athlete rises through the legs and finishes under control.
Don't Skip the Handstand
Straight Support
Bent elbows reduce control and can make the athlete collapse into the bridge too quickly.
Push Tall First
Athlete should reach stable inversion before allowing the shoulders to open forward.
Control the Arch
The arch should be deliberately introduced rather than appearing immediately from an uncontrolled kick.
The Bridge Should Be Distributed
Good bridge mechanics use the shoulders, upper back, trunk, hips and legs together rather than concentrating the shape in one part of the spine.
Bridge → Stand
Shift First
Athlete moves body weight toward the feet before trying to lift the hands from the surface.
Hips Stay High
Dropping the hips makes the stand-up significantly harder and often causes the athlete to sit backwards.
Chest Finishes the Skill
Once weight is sufficiently over the feet, the hands leave and the athlete completes the rise to standing.
Build the Limber in Pieces
Athlete can support the bridge pain-free with active arms and controlled breathing.
Athlete learns to move the chest toward and away from the feet without collapsing.
Athlete can independently shift onto the feet and rise.
Athlete demonstrates reliable straight-arm inversion separately.
Introduce the descent while keeping shoulders active and feet controlled.
Athlete proves they can arrive safely without immediately relying on momentum to stand.
Connect the handstand, descent, bridge and stand-up into one continuous skill.
Smooth the bridge arrival into the weight shift without losing control.
Maintain the split-leg pathway and replace the two-foot bridge arrival with sequential foot landing.
Train the Missing Piece
Bridge Hold
Establish comfortable active support before adding dynamic entry or exit.
Bridge Shoulder Shift
Teach the chest and shoulders to travel toward the hands and feet while maintaining control.
Bridge Stand-Up
Isolate the second half until the athlete can rise independently.
Handstand Hold
Ensure the athlete can organise the body before introducing the arch.
Controlled Handstand Lower
Teach the athlete to lower with shoulder control rather than allowing the feet to crash toward the floor.
Handstand → Arch Shape
Introduce the change of body shape progressively and deliberately.
Soft Bridge Arrival
Focus on controlling the final distance between the feet and floor.
Bridge → Shift → Stand
Reinforce the order needed for an efficient finish.
Split Handstand Control
Once Limber mechanics are secure, maintain active leg separation in preparation for Front Walkover.

Why Front Limber Is Useful
Front Walkover
Builds the handstand-to-bridge and stand-up strength needed before retaining the split-leg pathway.
Handstand Control
Athletes learn to manipulate body shape from inversion rather than simply falling out of the handstand.
Shoulder Opening
Develops active overhead range that is useful across walkovers and other tumbling shapes.
Bridge Strength
Teaches the athlete to use a bridge dynamically rather than only holding a passive flexibility position.
What Supports a Strong Front Limber?
Shoulder Flexion
Good overhead range reduces the need to force excessive extension elsewhere.
Active Shoulders
Athlete must continue supporting body weight as the centre of mass moves beyond the hands.
Thoracic Extension
Upper-back contribution helps distribute the bridge shape.
Glutes & Legs
Lower-body strength supports the bridge stand-up and stable finish.
Core Control
Athlete needs to determine when to open and when to maintain tension.
Wrist Tolerance
Hands remain loaded through both the handstand and bridge portions of the skill.
Front Limber Safety
Painful or collapsing bridges should not be used as a foundation for dynamic skills.
Mobility should be developed progressively rather than manually forcing an athlete deeper into extension.
Repeated elbow collapse is a reason to regress the skill.
Feet should not repeatedly crash into the floor from an uncontrolled handstand.
Wrist, shoulder, neck or back pain is not a technique cue.
Spotting and hands-on assistance must remain within appropriate practical qualification and training.

Technique Before Inclusion
Front Limber can provide useful choreography and development, but coaches should not include it merely because an athlete can force themselves through it.
The bridge and stand should remain visibly controlled, pain-free and repeatable.
IASF 2026–27 Context
Constant-Contact Tumbling
Current IASF Level 1 rules allow standing tumbling skills with constant physical contact with the performance surface, including examples such as cartwheels, rolls, walkovers and handstands.
A conventional Front Limber remains a constant-contact skill through hands and feet and fits within this Level 1 framework.
Not Separately Named as Level Appropriate
The current 2026 Level Appropriate document specifically names Front Walkover at Level 1 but does not separately list Front Limber.
For Hotshots coaching purposes, treat Front Limber as a valuable legal development skill rather than assuming it independently adds Level Appropriate difficulty credit.
